FAQ
Why have you organised this event?
Each of the committee members has their own motivation for organising the ICLU, but we are united in our belief that a space to bring people together to discuss living communally is needed in Ireland. It is our sincerest hope that the ICLU will initiate and support the formation of communities around Ireland.
How much will it cost to attend?
We have varying prices to take account of people’s differing abilities to pay. The standard ticket cost is €10, which covers the cost of venue hire, insurance, etc. We have a discounted ticket cost of €0 for those who are unable to pay the standard ticket cost. Finally, solidarity tickets cost €20. These tickets allow for some prospective participants, who otherwise would not be able to attend the ICLU, to join us also.
What is an Unconference? How does it work?
The idea behind the unconference is that there are no scheduled speakers and there are many different discussions going on simultaneously, each of which are spontaneously generated by the participants themselves. Instead of having a pre-determined schedule of talks, the schedule and events are created by the participants, with the help of facilitators. Participants fill in ‘session cards’ which are then, with the support of a facilitator, added to the schedule.
note: We are, however, encouraging participants to come up with discussion topics/content prior to the unconference, and are happy to hear from you if you have any ideas that you think would add to the progress or satisfaction of the group.
Here is what the schedule will look like prior to generating the questions for each session. The number of spaces will be based on the availability of space at the venue and the number of questions generated.

Perhaps you might like to think about the questions you’d like to discuss or presentation you’d like to give at the ICLU.
How long will the event run for?
The Unconference will take place from 9:30 to 18:00 and there will be some tea and coffees afterwards at a local venue or someone’s house.
What if I’m not an expert?
The whole idea behind the ICLU is to bring together both experts in different fields and ‘regular’ people who just want to be the change and live a sustainable and/or communal lifestyle.
Will there be food? (What is a pot luck?)
Yes there will be food :) In keeping with the spirit of the event, we will be holding a pot luck lunch at each venue. This also helps us ensure that the price of attending is low. We ask that all attendees bring a dish, a note card with ingredients and any allergen information, and their own plate and cutlery. As peanut allergies are relatively common, please do not include peanuts in any dish you bring to the potluck. If you want an idea of what people are intending to bring along to the potluck for each event, you can find a list of the dishes that participants will be bringing on each of the event pages.
Do you have insurance?
Yes. The events are covered by Public Liability Insurance.
Where is the money going?
The money generated from ticket sales will cover the costs of the Unconference, namely venue hire, insurance, and promotional costs. Any surplus monies generated will be used for potential future events. They will be held in trust until the 31st December 2017, and if no further community living events come out of the unconferences the proceeds will be donated to our nominated charity - Irish Seed Savers.
Can I bring my child?
The Unconference is a 16+ event. This is due to the form of public liability insurance we could afford which has child safety restrictions.
I don’t know anything about community living. Can I come?
Absolutely! This event is being organised to help people find answers to any questions they have around community living.
I know everything about community living. Should I come?
Absolutely! the Unconference is both about providing opportunities to meet with other like-minded people to potentially start a community living initiative and also to share with people who know little about community living and are motivated to learn more about it.
Why can’t you hold a Community Living Unconference in Derry/Kerry/Clare?
We are a small group of volunteers who have limited time and resources and so we went with the major population centres in order to facilitate ease of access to the Unconference. That said, we are happy to share our insights into running the Unconference with others and support them to offer something similar in their locality. It takes a bit of time and commitment but it’s a lot easier than you might think :)
What can I do before the unconference?
Please have a think about what you want to get out of the unconference and also offer others. You can prepare some notes or questions that you think are relevant. But feel free to just come with a curious mind as well. If you have an opportunity to organise your own discussions before the event, this could add to the experience when you arrive.
Can I volunteer?
The event is mostly co-created, with the help of facilitators. So if any extra hands are needed during the unconference, or you notice anything that could boost the experience, just get stuck in. Spreading the word about the unconference would also be a great help. We are eager to have a full house.
